A Conversation with Gladys Heu

Gladys Heu shot Shared Horizon on a Pentax Espio 60s for Flash. Issue 03 — a Project See & B × Jean Marie Film collaboration giving twenty creatives second-hand film cameras and total freedom.

Her starting point was simple: walking the streets of Freo, noticing one constant at every turn.

Birds.

That small repetition turned into a bigger question: what do they see that we don’t?

In Shared Horizon, Gladys treats birds as both subject and guide. Each photographic pair begins with a bird, captured in a moment of stillness, followed by a second image taken in the direction of the bird’s view.

A quiet sequence. A shift in perspective.

As Gladys writes:
“With this piece, I wanted to explore different perspectives of our shared world. The birds became both subject and guide, leading me to compositions I wouldn’t have found on my own.”

The work isn’t about chasing the perfect shot. It’s about attention — letting something outside yourself lead the frame. Looking where you wouldn’t normally look. Pausing long enough to notice what’s been there the whole time.

“By aligning my gaze with theirs, I attempted to share their perspective, bridging the space between species through vision.”
